$4.25 National Average Gas Price by Memorial Day
April 25, 2011

With the summer driving season right around the corner, many motorists are rethinking their summer travel plans, as analysts predict the national average gas price will reach $4.25 per gallon by Memorial Day. It is relatively easy to put special summer road trip plans on hold, but high gas prices are also an everyday burden as the price of driving to work, school, and to run errands grows almost daily.

Because of rising gas prices, many drivers are looking for more efficient alternatives to their normal gas guzzling vehicles. Walking or pedaling a bicycle are healthy choices, but aren't practical for people in suburban or rural areas who may live many miles away from work, school, or shopping centers. So what is a motorist to do, when the prices at the gas pumps become too much to bear?

More and more commuters are choosing to invest in a motorized scooter or moped to help alleviate the cash crunch due to high gas prices. Many street legal models of moped can go as fast as 85 miles per hour and all are more fuel efficient than the smallest compact cars. A compact Chevy Aveo gets a maximum of 35 miles per gallon, while a 150cc Scooter more than doubles that at 80 MPG. Even a Prius Hybrid only gets a maximum of 55 miles per gallon, well below the mileage offered by a scooter.

When gas prices inevitably reach $4.25 a gallon, the Aveo will cost about 12 cents a mile to operate, while riding a scooter will cost only 5.3 cents per mile. Let's say your daily commute to and from work is 50 miles round trip, 250 total miles per week. In the Aveo, you would spend $30 a week on gas, while on a scooter, your weekly gas expenditure would be only $13.25!

With many scooters priced very affordably, it won't take long to recoup the initial investment and start saving some serious bucks on gas. A new 150cc Scooter can be yours for as low as $800. With at least $16 a week in gas savings, that scooter will have paid for itself in only about a year. No matter how high gas prices rise, you'll always save with a scooter!
