This heavy duty transom is rated at 5 HP. We have tested it with 10 and 15 HP motors. We felt that the 5 HP rating was more than enough since most of these pontoons would be used with electric motors. With the larger motors the pontoon is very fast and we wanted a conservative safe rating. Short 15 to 16 inch shaft gas motors, "often referred to as a short shaft motor" work great on this 12 ft. pontoon boat!
Most of our competitors boats with round pontoons that sit so high above the water. They require a minimum of a long 20" shaft motor. Our pontoon works great even with short, long or XL long shaft motors.
